Summer School – Third International Intensive Course in Old Javanese

Le vieux javanais est la langue vernaculaire la plus prestigieuse de l’Indonésie prémoderne. Dotée d’une riche tradition littéraire indianisée ainsi que d’un large corpus épigraphique couvrant la période de 800 à 1500 de n. è., cette langue continue de jouer un rôle primordial dans la vie religieuse, rituelle et intellectuelle de l’île de Bali jusqu’à l’époque contemporaine. La Third International Intensive Summer Course in Old Javanese vise à former un groupe mixte d’étudiants et de chercheurs confirmés de diverses origins à l’études de cette langue, qui n’est actuellement enseigné dans aucune université occidentale, sauf à l’EPHE, et dont l’enseignement ne repose même pas sur une base solide en Indonésie. Les participants seront intensivement instruits en grammaire, puis recevront un apercu de divers genres littéraires, ainsi que de l’épigraphie vieux-javanais. Dans le but de renforcer l’impact positif de deux éditions antérieures de cette école d’été, le Third Intensive Course sera co-organisé par Andrea Acri (EPHE) et Arlo Griffiths (EFEO). Cette activité répond aux finalités des Études globales en adoptant une approche résolument transrégionale du passé Indonésien, qui insiste sur la longue durée et la pluridisciplinarité, tout en stimulant la rencontre scientifique entre étudiants Indonésiens et étrangers, de l’Occident et d’autres pays d’Asie.

Organized by the the École française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO) in collaboration with the École Pratique des Hautes Études (EPHE), the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia (Perpusnas) and the Royal Netherlands Institute for Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV)
Aiming to support the training of a new generation of Old Javanese philologists and to stimulate international collaboration in this field, the École française d’Extrême-Orient (French School of Asian Studies, EFEO), in collaboration with the École Pratique des Hautes Études (Paris), the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia (Perpusnas) and the Royal Netherlands Institute for Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV), will organize this year, for the third time, an international intensive course in Old Javanese.
Concept. An academic retreat lasting 11 days attended by about 20 students who will be guided in intensive manner by three specialists of Old Javanese philology. The program will take place in typical Javanese natural surroundings while the learning experience will be enriched by excursions to vestiges of ancient Hindu and Buddhist civilization in East Java.
Aim. The student who has completed the intensive course is able independently to read and analyze Old Javanese texts and is aware of the available research tools (Dictionaries, Grammars, etc.).
Location. The program will take place on a location on the flank of Mount Penanggungan in East Java that is conducive to intensive collective study and in whose vicinity are found vestiges of ancient Java such as temples, sculptures and stone inscriptions in Old Javanese language.
Dates. The program will take place from 14 through 25 July, 2017.
Teachers. The team of teachers is composed of Willem van der Molen (KITLV and University of Indonesia), Dwi Puspitorini (UI), Andrea Acri (EPHE/Paris) and Arlo Griffiths (EFEO/Paris).
Course content. The first five days we will focus on intensive study of Old Javanese grammar, after which, during the second five days, we will read representative samples of four principal genres of the Old Javanese textual corpus: Parwas, Kakawins, Tutur/Tattvas, and Inscriptions (2 hours per day each). Students who already have significant experience with Old Javanese, for instance after graduating from one of the previous courses (2014, 2015), can also be accommodated.
Language of Instruction. English.
Participants. We will admit about 15 participants from Indonesian universities or other institutions. We also welcome about 5 foreign scholars of Sanskrit or other related fields, or foreign graduate students, who wish to learn Old Javanese.
Admission. Admission will proceed through selection on the basis of an application file, which should consist of:
(a) your CV
(b) a statement of motivation explaining your interest in participation
(c) clear evidence of solid command of English (such as a TOEFL score)
(d) if relevant a reasoned request for financial support toward your international travel costs

Admission for foreign as well as Indonesia participants will be open from the date of publication of this announcement until 15 April.
Costs. Participants are expected to travel on their own expense to Juanda International Airport in Surabaya. As modest contribution to the costs of transportation between Surabaya and the location on Mount Penanggungan, lodging, board, excursions, and study material, all participants will be asked to pay a registration fee:
• 1 million Rupiah for all Indonesian participants
• 1 million Rupiah for foreign students
• 3 million Rupiah for other foreign participants
Most of the funding for organizing this event is contributed by the IRIS Études Globales of PSL Research University (Paris); by the French Embassy in Indonesia; and by the EFEO.
